After the news emerged recently that both Leicester and Newcastle are interested in Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers, alarm bells should be ringing at Celtic Park.
The Northern Irishman’s dissatisfaction with the club and the board’s spending policy is well documented. This tension reached fever pitch over the summer, as The Hoops crashed out of the Champions League at the qualifying stage.
The former Liverpool boss urged the board to be more liberal with their spending if the club were to be successful in Europe, but not a huge amount happened. A few signings were made, but nothing to suggest that the club is going in the direction that Rodgers wants.
However, this interest from various Premier League clubs should be a shot across the bow to Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell. This is a clear sign that there are many clubs interested in his manager, and will snap him up given the opportunity. Some Premier League managers are in precarious positions, and there could be a number of sackings soon. Rodgers may be top of a few clubs’ list in terms of replacements.
Therefore, the board at the club must meet Rodgers’ demands or face losing him. Surely this transfer window will be the opportunity to display their support for the manager, and the fact that they still want him at the club. After winning the domestic treble for two consecutive season’s, Rodgers sees Europe as the next frontier that the Scottish giants need to conquer, but must feel let down by his board. However, they are facing a time where they either back him, or face losing him.
