Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to show their appreciation for Phil Parkinson’s efforts, following an incredible run of form since the turn of the year. The Black Cats had won just twice in 13 outings before the New Year, leaving them in a difficult situation as promotion looked unlikely.
However, Parkinson – who replaced Jack Ross on October 17th – has overseen a remarkable turnaround which has left the Wearsiders looking in fine fettle as they target the top of League One.
The former Bolton manager – who had only won three games from 14 before 2020 began – has seen his side suffer defeat just once in ten games so far this year, winning seven of those fixtures while conceding just four goals.
Following their 1-0 win over Oxford on Saturday, Sunderland now sit fifth and are just three points off first-place Rotherham – it truly has been an amazing transformation from Parkinson.
Let’s see what the Sunderland fans on Twitter have been saying about the boss…
To kick off the discussion, Philip said that “huge credit” must go to the 52-year-old for his efforts, saying that he deserves “a lot of respect” for overseeing such a brilliant turnaround.
Anthony then said “credit where it’s due” having noted that Parkinson was “the most hated man in Sunderland at Christmas” – you can see why he was, having won just three of his first 14 games.
Elsewhere, Marco Oswald said that he “wanted him gone” earlier in the campaign, but doesn’t mind admitting when he’s wrong in appreciation of what the Sunderland manager has done so far in 2020.
Gavin then echoed that sentiment in saying that he was “calling for” Parkinson to be sacked not too long ago, although he “deserves big praise now”.
Lastly, Keelan thinks ‘Parky’ has turned the club into the side that they should’ve been when they first dropped into League One, before labelling the Black Cats as “defensively rock solid”.
Where is he from?! Can you name which obscure countries these famous players have represented?
Jake then said “full credit” to Parkinson and his staff for sorting out the defence, before adding that the Oxford win would’ve been a 1-1 draw under Ross.
In other news, these Sunderland fans have praised this “tremendous player” who is an early shout for the Player of the Season award…
