Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe has signed a new three-year deal with the club which will see him stay at White Hart Lane until 2015, according to the BBC.
Defoe is regarded as a fans’ favourite at Spurs, after rejoining the club from Portsmouth in January 2009 for £16 million. However, it had been rumoured over the past few days that Defoe was on his way out of Spurs as he didn’t feature in the manager Anrde Villas-Boas’ plans. However, Defoe’s contract extension has now quashed those rumours.
Spurs tweeted on their official Twitter account, “We are delighted to announce that Jermain Defoe has signed a new contract with the club until 2015.” Defoe, 29, who is likely to win his 50th England cap next week against Moldova, also tweeted expressing his delight at staying in North London, “Fantastic-week – signed my new contract at Spurs and I’m meeting up with England on Monday for two important games.”
Defoe’s new contract agreement will also come as a relief to Spurs manager Villas-Boas, who currently has only two other out-and-out strikers at his disposal in Emmanuel Adebayor and youngster Harry Kane.
Although, rumours continue to circulate about a surprise return for Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, with United manager Sir Alex Ferguson speculating that it wouldn’t surprise him if he was at Tottenham right now.
