Graham Callaghan joined the View from the Gwladys podcast to discuss Everton’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United from last Sunday and quickly touched upon Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s development.
Calvert-Lewin is definitely one of the most important players currently at Goodison Park but despite his brilliance and obvious qualities, he’s still far from a finished product.
For Callaghan, there is no doubt that there is one crucial aspect of his profile that needs to improve if he’s to become a world-class player in the future – his finishing.
Here’s what he said for the View from the Gwladys podcast (4/3/2020): “If you’re going to lead the line and be the main man up top for a club aspiring to go where we want to go, you got to be able to put the ball in the net 9/10, not 2/10. I’m being really ambitious here saying that he should be doing it already but you know that that’s the part of his game he’s got to improve, no two ways about it.”
Even though Callaghan is criticising Calvert-Lewin’s finishing, the 22-year-old has already scored 15 goals across all competitions in 2019/20, showing that he is slowly but surely turning into a really lethal forward.
But it’s also true that he’s missed a total of 13 big chances (via SofaScore) in the Premier League alone in the current campaign so there’s definitely some room for improvement here.
Maybe it’s a lot to ask for from such a young player but it’s also a pretty valid point to make.
