Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown is hopeful that both Tahith Chong and Angel Gomes will commit their futures to the club in the coming months, per an exclusive interview with Football FanCast.
What’s he said?
Chong and Gomes both have contracts that expire at the end of this season.
The former, a versatile winger who can play on the right flank and the left flank, has made 10 first-team appearances for the club this season, registering an assist in the Europa League clash with Club Brugge.
Gomes, meanwhile, has played six times, though he has had just 19 minutes in the Premier League.
Chong is 20, while Gomes is 19, and while Chong has been linked with Inter Milan, Gomes is reported to be considering a summer exit too having rejected United’s offers of a new contract.
However, Brown believes that their futures will be sorted out soon, and has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get the calls right.
Quickfire Questions: Can you get 100% on this Man United prodigies quiz?
He said: “They’re both talented players and I’m sure they’ll want to stay and everything can get sorted out.
“But there’s a lot of young lads in the team that are all trying to get into that first-team squad.
“These two are good players and Ole will know the right time to bring them in. He’s brought them in every now and again this season, and sometimes it takes a little bit longer. Hopefully they get sorted out.”
Can’t lose both
You’d have to hope that Brown is right because United can’t be negligent enough to let two talented youngsters slip through their fingers.
Both could leave for nothing despite teetering on the precipice of a first-team breakthrough.
Gomes has already made the step up to the U23s and has impressed, scoring 10 goals and registering six assists in 27 games, while Chong has 16 goals and eight assists to his name for the same team.
Both are youth internationals, too, with Gomes capped by various England age groups and Chong coming through the Netherlands youth system.
One has to believe that United will want to keep them around and convince them there is a pathway to the first-team.
It would be a bitter blow to see both walk away once this season ends.
Meanwhile, Man United fans are all laughing at the same player!
